Notes: Today marks the 11th annual Father Marco Cup.The festivities start at noon sharp with lunch and the freshman game. Continuing the undercard will be the junior varsity teams at 2pm . Followed by the main event the #2 SLUH Jr. Bills traveling to the Palace on Ballas to face the #3 ranked De Smet Spartans.
As in years past today features some fantastic fundraising opportunities with multiple raffle tickets available for purchase, along with wristbands for a lunch featuring Gus' Pretzels and a solid BBQ spread of dogs, burgers, turkey, pork, and some mouth watering brisket. This years supported charities will be; Neighborhood Houses (largest provider of free after school services in the City of St. Louis, serving 900 children a day in 13 elementary schools by providing a safe environment for educational enrichment and developing social and life skills), Mike Sennett Count on Me Foundation (Provides scholarships, mentoring and lacrosse instruction to economically disadvantaged youth in the St. Louis metro area) and Loyola Academy – Lacrosse (Committed to helping underprivileged kids have access to a Catholic education and lacrosse). Financial donations accepted tomorrow & used lacrosse equipment accepted as well. The Jesuit family has always done a rock solid job of helping the community and today looks to be the same as it ever was.
As far as the game goes it should be a dogfight from start to finish. Be sure to get there on time as De Smet senior face-off man Craig Koester (Lynchburg College) has a thing for scoring goals off the opening draw. However expect SLUH junior Patrick Broughton to have a thing or two to say about that. Expect them to grind it out all afternoon. The goalies will be another huge factor SLUH has a brick wall in junior Jack Perryman who is having a breakout year. De Smet counters with John Tocco who played a phenomenal game in a 2OT loss to #1 Country Day. The Spartans seem to have more offense fire power with Noah Iversen leading the charge of fellow teammates Spencer Umbeck, Ben Ross, and Leonard Jones. De Smet also boasts agruably the toughest defense in the state. The defensive law firm of Rougeau, Pandolfo, and Snodgrass is thriving right now. No one is safe on their half of the field or any part of it for that matter. Defensivley SLUH looks to senior leader Hunter Schmidt a impact player for the Jr. Bills basketball team he is not new to the big game atmosphere. Offensively look for Noah Hewlett to pace the Jr. Bills along with fellow senior Eric Helfrich.
This will be a great day for the St. Louis lacrosse community. Admission is free. Bring the whole family and enjoy a fantastic day of lacrosse. Lets pack the stands.
My Call: 14-11 De Smet
