For Country Day's seniors, today marks the final chapter of the chase of four state titles in four years. Led by a stalwart class of offensive talent the Rams will be looking to close out the dynasty. However Chaminade has scrapped and clawed to the title game, led by senior midfielder Michael McGovern the Red Devils will be looking to play spoiler this afternoon.
Chaminade is coming in hot off a huge upset win vs De Smet, in which sophmore Chis Handy dominated possession. McGovern capitalized on his chances and helped propel the Red Devils to the victory. However turnovers kept De Smet in the game. Chaminade must eliminate the unforced errors in order to stay in the hunt. Covington has to get on the score sheet early, and draw slides to open up McGovern's hammer of a step down shot. On the defensive side of the ball the Red Devils will need  a huge effort from goalie Grfffin Jasin who was lights out in the semis vs the Spartans. Sophmore Nico Feldman will have to grind out every face off  vs Denver commit Chris Handy.
MICDS has had a whirlwind of a week. With plenty of off-field distractions the Rams must dial it in to compete. Senior Harry Wellford will be a game time decision. If he cannot go fellow senior Gaines Bundy will have to pick up the slack. Little brother Graham Bundy Jr. Has had one hell of a year and the Rams will need his best effort this afternoon. .
This afternoons game should be a heavy-weight fight to the bell. With both teams scratching and clawing for the title, the fans should be in for a real treat.

Game Notes

Same as it ever was.

As we return to the beautiful campus of Lindenwood University, we again find the state championship road going through MICDS/SLUH. In a rematch of last years title game SLUH will be looking to end MICDS' streak of 3 state titles. Both teams are loaded on offense. However defensively  these units are not as dominant as in years past. Ball possessions, faceoffs, and clearing will be huge as whichever team has the ball will score and score a lot.
MICDS comes in hot after a stomping of "rival" JBS 17-5 in their quarterfinal match up. The Rams have not lost an instate game in at least 3 years. Paced by Sophmore first team all state face off man Nico Feldman handing them the ball at near a 70 % clip, the Rams potent offense is clicking on all cylinders. With Gaines Bundy back to his normal vibe after a few rough games, little brother Graham having a record year, Thomas Neidringhaus finding his role, Harold being Harold, and Alexander Feldman having more options to feed after a revamped offense, the Rams are vibing. Also in the past two match ups Sluh has run a zone at times vs the Rams. Look for Country Day to get their shooters time/room off cuts and off ball picks if faced with the zone.
Junior Will Perryman will be looking to have his best night in order to tilt the scales toward the UHigh. After suffering a severe high ankle sprain in his best game of the year Friday night vs CBCHS, senior Jimmy Tramelli is out for this evening. Perryman is more than ready but the loss of Tramelli is huge for the Jr. Bills. Fellow senior Anthony Hughes has been a monster on the face off wing in the past 5/6 games and will need to continue as such. Will Farroll has set the record for points for SLUH this season. Alongside Charlie Carse and Pat Howley the attack has stepped up in the past few games. However consistency issues were still showing in the quarterfinal game vs CBCHS spotting the cadets a 6-1 lead. Jerry Howe is poised for a breakout game after several great chances on Friday night fell by wayside look for him to try and get on the board early. This UHigh team have been the heart attack kids all year but that will not work tonight. The Jr. Bills must come out ready to play. If they spot Country Day a cushion from the jump it will be very tough to comeback from.

It is officially the best day of the lacrosse calendar year.  Despite the weather it is looking like things will clear up just in time for the opening face off. Both teams are coming off wins and with several days rest and are healthy. SLUH is looking for their third win in a row in the annual match up with the Spartans. The mood over on Ballas is slightly different as their seniors have never won The cup.
Both teams this year are about as even matched as they have been in recent years. As always this one should come down to the final minutes.
De Smet had a solid rebound game vs CBC running it up and getting their mojo back, after a disastrous showing vs Country Day. All things will start at the face off dot with the two headed monster of Rogers&McDonough will be in a dogfight with the law&order firm of Perryman&Tramelli, P.C.  With both teams being so equal possession will be a huge factor today and it all starts with face offs. Once the ball is settled SLUH will look to draw slides with their athletic midfield of Anthony Hughes and the brothers Hannah. Once they draw the slide they look to any of their three attackmen as they all are well balanced feed/finishers. Will Farroll has the hot hand of late and will need to continue his effort today under the pressure.
On defense this will be senior goalie Joe L'hommedieu's first Fr Marco cup. The senior has been huge for the Jr. Bill this year but clearing has been suspect at times. With the patented De Smet 10 man ride this could be an issue. If the Spartans are able force turnovers in the clearing game, the unsettled situations will be easy money for the veteran Radke. De Smet will need big performances from their midfield both offensively and defensively with Trost and Brown. Lastly sophmore Dylan Radke will be playing in his second Fr Marco Cup game after being thrown into the fire last year. Radke will need to play his best game today as he is facing a strong attack unit.
Game time is three hours from now hope to see a parking lot full of tents and umbrellas for the tailgate. Come out and bring the family. You won't melt

Father Marco Cup 2017 Preview Part 2: De Smet Jesuit High School

The 13th Annual Father Marco Cup
4:00 4/29 De Smet Jesuit

Brought to you by
Part 2 De Smet Jesuit High School Preview

If you're a Spartan fan Saturday's matchup feels like a must win. Since 2014 De Smet is just 1-5 vs The U-High. With their last win coming in the 2014 Fr Marco cup, this group of seniors is ready to get the monkey off their back. Led by senior captain Derek Radke they are looking to right the ship Saturday afternoon. I sat down with The Brothers Radke (Derek&Dylan respectively), and the two headed monster at the face-off dot (Mark D. "Max" Rogers II&Michael McDonough) to get a vibe for how they look to get the job done in 2017.

PS: After a rough go vs Country Day what have you guys done to bounce back?
MM: After watching the Country Day film it comes down to the little things that cost us the game. In the 1st quarter alone we had 3 crease shots that weren't finished. So practice this week has been aimed to fix the little things in our game. At the end of the day tho it comes down to being just lacrosse players and not robots out on the field doing the same thing over and over again.
DeR: Yes, after a tough one against Country Day we have done our best to forget about that and move on.  I believe we were able to bounce back with the big win vs CBC which was big for us.  After that loss, a few guys lost a lot of confidence but after the big win, they regained all that they lost.
DyR: Everyone on the team was very angry after our loss to MICDS, all everyone wanted to do was come out in our next games and get revenge.  So practice last week and this week was a little more fast paced.   I think the win over Lafayette, and the big win over CBC has really helped put us back on track.

PS: With coaching staff full of De Smet alumni does this week feel different than others?
MM: Last year's Father Marco game was a lot different than most years. We have always had an abundance of DeSmet alums on our coaching staff, but last year was different since Coach Jarvis and Coach Tom had left SLUH to come coach us. So that alone has made the game so much more competitive for us. This year, however, is even more special to the team since it is the 10 year anniversary of the legendary De Smet Coach Mike Sennet's death. In the last couple weeks, we have had multiple meets before practice talking about how much this team meant to coach Sennett and how much this game means to our current coaches. I think this new aspect to the game Saturday that was brought to our attention has put a lot more energy in our guys to win this game for our coaches.
MR: Well, of course, this is the biggest rivalry in STL so the nerves are there but all around we have to treat this as a normal game and show them who the better team is.

PS: Derek you have had a hell of a Career here. What does it mean to you playing in your final Fr Marco Cup?
DeR: I wouldn't be as successful as I have been without my teammates, these guys are great, our work ethic as a team in very unique and the locker room environment makes everything so much better.  This being my last Father Marco Cup, makes me pretty sad.  I haven't won a  Father Marco Cup at the varsity level so this game means so much to me.  Personally, this senior group has all said that this game is the most important game of the year for us, we have something to prove to these baby bills that knocked us out last year, which they didn't deserve.

PS: Michael and Mr. Rogers The Second, you will be going up against the law&order firm of Trammeli&Perryman how will the two head monster adjust? Or just business as usual?
MM: It will definitely be a battle at the X Saturday neither one of us is going to roll over for the other. This week at practice Mark Jr and I have been working a lot on technique preparing ourselves for the quick and very technically sound Perryman. For Jimmy, it just comes down to outpowering him. He is a big dude and if we stay in the scrum for too long he will over power us. At the end of the day tho there is nothing new that we will be changing to our game we are just going to have to last till the fourth quarter and weather the storm early.
MR: I think it is going to be business, as usual, I personally think that Mike and I are stronger physically and mentally at the X and it will be a battle.

PS: Dylan after being baptized by fire last how's this year going?
DyR: I really think this year is going very well for me, last year I was a timid freshman who was a little scared to speak up, but now, being a sophomore and having a year under my belt I feel confidence in the cage, and confidence to speak up and be one of the captains of the defense.

PS: With so many seniors how is the chemistry in the room?
MM: After playing with 5 of these seniors for three years and playing with the rest of them for two years I can easily say that our chemistry is the same if not better than the seniors my sophomore year had with the team being lead by attackman Noah Iverson. Every one of us knows each other's tendencies and can build around these tendencies to put the ball in the back of the net.

PS: To finish, last year you boys came up just short, what are you seniors doing to ensure this year ends on a different note?
MR: I think that the mindset this year isn't just on winning state. We are focusing on each game one at a time alongside developing as lacrosse players. After the MICDS game, the team came together and decided that game will be our last loss in STL this year and from here on out. We will outwork any team we are on the field with.
MM: Being able to hold that crystal cup is one thing that has been taken away from me for the last two years and I will do everything in my power to ensure that I get this opportunity. We found out in the CBC game earlier this week that we are very successful when we work as a team.  So if we want to be able to bring the cup home we are gonna have to have 6 contribute to the goal on the field rather than having one hero like we have done in years past.

Father Marco Cup 2017 Preview Part 1:St. Louis University High School

The 13th Annual Father Marco Cup 4:00 4/29 De Smet Jesuit
Brought to you By

Part 1 St. Louis University High School Preview

Well it is finally that time of the year again in St. Louis. The 13th Annual Father Marco Cup will be played on Saturday at DeSmet. Which also means it its time for the third annual Father Marco Cup preview. Different from this year we will be interviewing players from both schools as in years past it has been head coaches.
The Jr. Bills come in ranked #4 in the state (12-4) and are currently on a 6 game win streak. After some tough spots early in the season the Jr. Bills look to be back to their old selves. We sat down with Will Perryman, Jimmy Tramelli, John Sansone, Nolan Corker, Pat Howley and senior goalie Joe L'Hommedieu to get a read on this weekend.

PS:After having a rough start to the season how have you guys been able to pull it together?
JL: All our troubles and successes this season have come down to chemistry and drive. We've always had most of the skill, but at the beginning of the season we weren't communicating well or coming out strong in games.
NC: I wouldn’t consider our start to the season really rough, I would describe it more as inconsistent. Over the past few weeks, we have started focusing more on the little things during practices and also holding each other accountable, especially the seniors. Our seniors are now showing leadership and the underclassmen are stepping up into much needed roles so we can play more consistent as a team. I think the remainder of this season we will definitely have challenges, but we will be able to push through them together.
WP: It has had a lot to do with working hard at practice, and certain people stepping into leadership roles.  Our offense as a unit has been producing well, and I feel like we are going to peak.
PH: It's always hard when you lose a bunch of seniors and you have a whole new group of people to work with. It just takes time to learn more about your teammates and figure out how to play as one group.

PS: Most of you seniors are with Coach Gilbert for the second year do you feel more comfortbale with his system now?
NC: I feel a lot more comfortable this year with Coach Gilbert’s style of coaching and his game plans. Coach Seyer really didn't use as many picks and off ball movement, so last year was very difficult to adjust to the off ball movement that Coach Gilbert likes in his offense.
JL: I feel like Coaches system has had to change throughout the season. The team this year is completely different so we've required different styles of coaching, but it seems that coach has really hit a rhythm and we're all settling in.

PS: Will and Jimmy you guys are also having a great year filling in for the polar bear him self Patrick Broughton. Coach Gilbert does a great job of rotating you guys. What are some things you have focused on and how do you stay in your rythym?
WP: Basically, as a pair we have been keeping things really scrappy.   We win face offs when we need to, and we do whatever we can to win the ball.  All-in-all, so far this year we really have met any opponents that have been able to dominate either of us.  We feed off of each other, and work as a team to exploit our opponents weaknesses.   We know each others strengths, and we know when to apply those strengths.
JT: we see ourselves as more of a scrappy pair of face off guys because we can disturb the rhythm of our opponents out of our aggression we show at the x

PS: Joe you're having a great year and you had some big shoes to fill after the graduation of Jack Perryman, how have you handled the pressure?
JL: I just came into the season knowing I had a job to do and knowing I had to do that job just as well or better than Jack. I handle the pressure by knowing that my teammates rely on me to make the saves.

PS: Some of you are playing in your final Fr Marco Cup. What are some of your favorite memories of years past?
NC: Fr. Marco Cup is a special day of being able to spend it with all my teammates and of course Fr. Marco.  It’s a great day when all 3 teams (Freshmen, JV & Varsity) get to play and support one another. My favorite memory was last year putting up three goals and an assist in a winning effort to keep the Jesuit Cup at SLUH.
JL: My favorite memory from the cup is last year. It was such a close game, and you could really feel the competition.
PH: The absolute highlight of the Father Marco Cup is the man himself. Fr. Marco has been very influential to me at my time at SLUH. The event represents exactly what Fr. Marco stands for, good sportsmanship and service to others. It is always a highlight of my lacrosse season.

PS: SLUH stands by a "Men for Others" motto. What do you do each day to live by this?
NC: As I am finishing the last few weeks of my senior year, the motto “Men for Others” rings truer than ever. The friends that I have made at SLUH are like brothers to me and I would do anything for them and know they would do the same for me.  I’m fortune to have my health, friends and family – each day I think back to my senior project at Sherwood Elementary - I was able to make a difference by just lending a helping hand.  So as I move into the next chapter of my life, I intend to help out where ever needed and continue our motto of “Men for Others”.
JL: I live by the motto each day by coming to practice ready to work hard for my team. Everything that motivates me is the teammates playing with me.
PH: As it relates to lacrosse, I try to work for the guys around me instead of my personal glory.
JT: Helping the guys around me both in school and on the field. When I see a younger guy at practice or in a game who looks lost or isn't doing something right, I try to talk to them personally and try to pump them up for the next rep or play in a game
JS: On the field I help the guys that don't get a lot of playing time to improve. Whether that means nicely notifying them or straight up yelling if the problem persists.

PS: Lastly what are your personal and team goals as we roll into May with playoffs just around the Corner?
JS: We aim to reach our full potential. We have a ton, but some of us get heady and lose control.
WP: I think our goal is to take each game as it comes to us, and win all the games we can.  Hopefully, with this mentality we will end up in state, and bring the third championship back to the U. High.
PH: Having had to sit out the first half of the season, for me personally, I just want to continue to work each day to improve my game, as it relates to the team, I want to be back in that state championship game.
JT: Despite some of our tough losses this season, the team is still set in our goal of going all the way. We've been on a roll the past few weeks and we are looking to keep that going and keep the cup on Oakland.
NC: As we move into May with playoffs just around the corner, my personal and team goals are one in the same. I want us to be the best we can be and play to our fullest potential. We are in a good position right now, we have players returning from injuries, the younger players are stepping up with more confidence and overall the team is starting to gel as we head into our final four games. I know a lot people have doubted us this season and nothing motivates my teammates and me more than to prove them wrong and make it back to the state finals with a different outcome this year.

Huge thank you to all the boys for taking time out of their busy schedules to make this happen. Check back tomorrow for  a sit down the De Smet Spartans.

Since the schedules came out tonight's match up has been circled on the calendar.  A young Country Day coming to the Pallas on Ballas to face the senior laden De Smet Spartans. This game is shaping up to look like the 2015 triple OT match up that saw the Rams sneak out with a 10-9 win.
Despite being on the wrong end of a few 1 goal games Country Day looks to be business as usual. Despite some whispers in the community about inexperience and still gaps to fill from last year the Rams have scrapped to a 9-3 record. Pacing Country Day has been sophomore goalie Joe Maquire with a save percentage of 61%,  GAA of 4.73 and having ironed out the wrinkles in the clearing game Maguire has been more than a pleasant surprise to Rams fans. At the face off dot sophmore Nico Feldman (68%) and junior Eric Toone (64%) have done a great job of giving Country Day possession. However they will face one of their toughest test of the season in the two headed monster of Rogers and McDonough. Offensively the Rams are more loaded than ever. With a midfield unit led by sophomore Georgetown commit Graham Bundy Jr (32/14) along side his senior brother Gaines (24/17) They do a great job of dodging down hill and intiating offense. This may be the best Rams attack unit since '14. With Feldman (25/16),  BU bound Niedringhaus (34/10) and the UVA bound Wellford (31/30) they have given defenses fits all season.
De Smet comes in after having a full week off to get things organized. The most senior laden team in the state leadership should be no issue for the Spartans. Like the Rams they are paced by sophmore goalie Dylan Radke who is coming off a stellar freshman campaign and a good performance tonight would solidify him as the best in the state. As far as face offs go the two headed monster of Max&Mike will look to be in full effect, which will be key to keep the ball out of Country Day's hands. After losing partner in crime Leonard Jones to graduation the lawfirm of Radke & Ross have stepped up for the Spartans. At this point in the season both have found their niche and are getting in the groove. With Radke both a scoring and passing threat at (21/20) and Ross more of the finisher with (20/10) they are gelling at the right time.
This game should be one of the best of the year. If De Smet is able to keep the Rams under 10 goals look for a 1 goal thriller of a final . However that is much easier said than done. The Spartans have the best leadership in the state across their whole team and that will be big under the lights in a game like this. Both teams will n
eed big play out of their specialists and EMO/Man Down units. This should be a fun one. See everyone at 7:00 at the Pallas on Ballas

The first annual MCC lacrosse tournament has started off with a bang. Both semifinal games were close hard fought games that could have went either way. After the dust settled DeSmet and CBC were  the only ones left. DeSmet used a fourth quarter face off run to pull away 11-8.  Drew Brown is looking like one of the top midfielders in the state after his performance Tuesday, followed by cast of characters in Radke(Derek),Rogers,Mcdonough, and Wetzel the Spartans are ready to make a run for the 'Ship. After a baptism by fire his freshman year Radke (Dylan) is looking like the top goalie in the state and will need to be if the Spartans are going to make a run.
The Cadet's were able to sneak past the UHigh  Tuesday night. A highly debatable 2 minute non relaseable call turned the game from 5-4 SLUH to 7-5 CBC as the Cadets man up unit was clicking. CBC was short some key players and it looks like they might be with out them till the midway point of the season. CBC has speed and if they can beat DeSmet tonight without some of their core athletes CBC could be poised to make a run this year as well.
The face off battle will once again be a key factor tonight as the two headed monster of Rogers and Mcdonough will take on Chase Elinor. Max and Mike took over in the fourth to the point were Chaminade had to double pole the wings. If they can get rolling early it could get ugly quick.
